Taken from the center-cut or middle sections of the famous Warehouse H, Blanton’s Original Single Barrel was once designated for ambassadors, dignitaries, and Colonel Blanton’s family and friends. Today, everyone has access to the world’s first single barrel bourbon. The taste profile is sweet, with notes of citrus and oak. The creamy vanilla nose is teased with caramel and butterscotch, all underscored by familiar baking spices such as clove, nutmeg, or cinnamon. Blanton’s Original set the standard for single barrel bourbons in 1984. Best served neat or on the rocks.

You Definitely Won't Regret It

Let's get the obvious questions out of the way: Is this a great bourbon? Of course. Is it worth picking up at the current MSRP of 65-70 dollars? Absolutely. Is this potentially one of the most overhyped bourbons in recent memory? You bet it is. Is it worth secondary market prices for 120-200 dollars? I'd never pay it.

Just like anything that attained cult status, there is a reason it is popular. Blanton's is a very solid bourbon. It's not a one note bourbon and you can pick out a layers of flavor as it lingers on the palate. The finish is smooth and pleasant and leaves no harshness behind.

Oh, and don't forget that it has arguabely the coolest bottle in the industry. Whoever came up with the idea of making the corks collectible had better still be receiving a boatload of money each year from Buffalo Trace.

All that aside, it feels like we are in the midst of a renaissance of bourbon. If I came across this bottle at MSRP (or a bit over) I'd nab it, but make no mistake: there are PLENTY of bourbons at this price or even cheaper that are every bit as goood or even a little better. Bardstown Origin series and Redwood Empire are two that pop into mind that are similar, cheaper, and infinitely more attainable that may scratch that Blanton's itch if this one isn't attainable.
